Organization

The roles of CoSTEP – three fields of activity

Hokkaido University’s CoSTEP is a new type of organization that intimately connects education, practical application and research in science and technology communication.

CoSTEP – an educational organization for science and technology communication

CoSTEP produces science and technology communicators, who can enhance two-way information transfer between experts and the public in societal issues related to the two subjects. These are individuals who can effectively communicate to many people the social importance of science and technology and the significance and joy of learning in these fields. Today, individuals who build bridges in this way are required in all areas of society rather than only at universities and research institutes. Against this background, CoSTEP deploys an education program that welcomes adult learners.

A science and technology communicator is not an occupation with some specific qualifications; CoSTEP produces individuals who can play a real bridge-building role in a host of situations.

CoSTEP also develops and provides a variety of programs to teach science and technology communication, primarily for Hokkaido University students and faculty members.

CoSTEP – a practical organization for public relations and communication in science and technology

CoSTEP implements two-way communication activities in science and technology in various areas, including within Hokkaido University and in the community. Through such activities, we promote education and research in science and technology communication. CoSTEP students acquire the skills required of science and technology communicators through organizing science cafes and other events, the publication of public relations magazines and other print media, videos and radio programs, and more.

CoSTEP – a research organization for science and technology communication and personnel development

CoSTEP promotes theoretical and practical research on science and technology communication and the training of individuals to provide leadership in its fields.

We publish a peer-reviewed journal, “Japanese Journal of Science Communication” to disseminate research outcomes and facilitate exchanges with researchers and those engaged in science and technology communication at home and abroad. Anyone can contribute articles to the journal. We also host symposiums to promote exchanges and disseminate the results of practical application-based research.
